Das Leben der seligen Yolanda von Vianden in deutscher und englischer Übersetzung. Erste vollständige Ausgabe der Vita, die Pater Alexander Wiltheim nach dem altdeutschen Epos (Codex Mariendalensis) des Hermann von Veldenz im Jahre 1674 in lateinischer Sprache veröffentlichte.

In 1655, Alexander Wiltheim was staying at the Dominican convent in Mariental (St. Mary’s Dale), Luxembourg. There in the library he came across a bound text from the time around 1300. This contained a description, in almost 6000 lines of medieval German verse, of the life if Yolanda of Vianden (1231-1283). Alexander copied the complete text out by hand and translated it into a Latin version, which he later published, providing it with copious notes on the original, as well as a genealogy of the ancient counts of Vianden.

This edition by Gerad Newton and Guy Berg presents the Latin text in its entirety for the first time since 1674. Here and there the spelling has been changed in order to bring it into line with modern scholarly practice, while the text appears side-by-side with the translations into English and German. These are aimed at providing as true a reflection of the Latin original as possible, and are arranged in such a way as to allow the reader to make an easy and continuous comparison between the Latin, English and German.

Im Jahre 1655 weilte Alexander Wiltheim im Kloster Mariental und entdeckte in der dortigen Bibliothek eine Pergamenthandschrift aus der Zeit um 1300, die die Vita der Yolanda von Vianden enthielt, niedergeschrieben in fast 6000 mittelhochdeutschen Reimpaarversen. Er fertigte eine vollständige Abschrift an, die er ins Lateinische übersetzte und später drucken ließ, ergänzt um zahlreiche philologische Bemerkungen zum Urtext sowie um eine Genealogie des Viandener Grafenhauses.

Gerald Newton und Guy Berg legen mit ihrer Edition erstmals seit 1674 den vollständigen Text der Wiltheim-Ausgabe vor. Dazu wurde der lateinische Text normalisiert und ins Deutsche sowie ins Englische übertragen. Beide Übersetzungen sind textnah ausgerichtet und um eine wortgetreue Wiedergabe des Originals bemüht. Die doppelseitige synoptische Anordnung der drei Sprachfassungen gestattet einen problemlosen und fortlaufenden Vergleich des lateinischen Originals mit den beiden Übersetzungen.
